John J. Murray is one of those funny guys and his new special, “Rhinoceros,” just dropped on Amazon Prime.
Murray has been in the local comedy scene for well over a decade, jumping on local shows and headlining independent one-nighters in the area. He’ll be headlining a show at Mickey Quinn’s in Seminole on Aug. 17, for example. His podcast, “Something Planet,” has recorded more than 500 episodes, and he’s a regular guest on Johnny B’s nightly radio show on 102.5 FM The Bone.
Murray proudly embraces his “white trash” heritage, and his 420-friendly comedy is about as blue collar as it gets. And by getting the special, you’re supporting a true local: Murray, an army veteran, attended Dunedin High School.
As previously reported, Murray recorded “Rhinoceros” at Spitfire Comedy House in 2021. He recently told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that a desire to work on new material provided motivation to document his existing set.
“I decided it was time to retire this act, put it out into the world and start great on a new hour,” Murray said. “I think every comedian dreams about having a special one day, so it really is a dream come true.”
“Rhinoceros” is available now, and starts at $1.99.
