Earlier this year,  a massive deal allowing Aldi to purchase hundreds of Florida Winn-Dixies was officially finalized, and now we're starting to see which stores will be converted into the popular German discount grocer.

According to public permits, South Tampa's Winn Dixie at 2100 W Swann Ave. will soon be turned into a new Aldi.  The project, which is valued at $17.5 million, calls for "a retrofit of an existing Winn-Dixie store to sud-divide the space for a new Aldi store," and will include new interior and exterior walls and fixtures, equipment modification, and more.

The new Aldi will be the company's first location in South Tampa, and is strategically located a few blocks from the nearby Publix at 2401 W Azeele St.

No exact opening date is known at this time.

As of now, it doesn't appear any other Tampa Winn-Dixie locations have Aldi-related permits in the works, and the company has not officially commented on which stores will make the switch.

Last summer Creative Loafing Tampa Bay talked to dozens of employees at various Tampa Bay Winn-Dixies, and only the associates at the Ybor City location (805 E Dr Martin Luther King Jr Blvd.), told us their store would completely converted to an Aldi by next year.

The acquisition was announced in August of 2023, and was officially finalized last March. The sale price was not disclosed, but the deal, in part, allows Aldi to collectively purchase 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores across Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi from Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers.

"With the successful acquisition of Southeastern Grocers, and the addition of new stores, ALDI will deepen its presence in Florida and the Southeast to offer millions of shoppers a simpler, easier and more affordable grocery experience," ALDI said in a press release.

The grocer added that roughly 50 Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores will begin the conversion process in late 2024, and will reopen as Aldi stores in 2025.
